Why is called plumbing?
In the early 1800s, London’s sewer system was an incoherent mess of independent systems that funneled waste directly into the River Thames. The result was a “Great Stink” that left houses of parliament soaking their curtains in cholide of lime to try and hide the smell.
Now the city’s $7-billion Tideway program is working to solve the same problem, with contractors sinking huge shafts in the riverbanks to accommodate tunnels that will intercept most of the 32 million tons of combined-sewer overflows that spill into the Thames each year. The tunnels will also run under the city’s main business districts and high-value residential neighborhoods, and some of those sites have drawn protests from local residents who say the shafts will stall their neighborhood’s development plans for a decade.
The tunnels are also 60% more expensive than the desktop estimates used for the 2007 project, though Stride says the fine-tuning has saved the project money. He’s now focusing on securing regulatory approval for the work and, later this year, is scheduled to publish final route proposals, incorporating public comments.
