I will never forget when we moved to Las Vegas and our electric bills went from $100 to $200 and then BAM! We got our first $600 electric bill. Yes, you read that right… I think it was $561 smackaroos. With us not being used to the heat and having kids at home during the summer, it was an unexpected surprise (well, aren’t all surprises?)!

Here are a few tips on how to save on your electric bill (especially if you live in the Las Vegas valley).

  • Call Nevada Power (or your electric service) and ask to be placed on the payment plan, that way your monthly bill is the same each month. What they do is look at your home’s history for the past year and divide it by 12 and THAT is your monthly payment. While it doesn’t save money, it helps you plan your budget for each month. {Heck, even if you don’t live here — call your power company and see if they have the same program.}
  • We have gorgeous weather about 9 month out of the year and if you have room, line dry some of your laundry. Isn’t it great drying off with a towel or sleeping in fresh sheets that smell wonderfully fresh?
  • We have so many power cords / chargers plugged in that are not being used. While they are not sucking a lot of kilowatts, they do add up so unplug what you are not using.
  • Someone suggested adding foam to your garage door to insulate it to keep your garage cool. While this doesn’t help the inside, if you work in your garage often it will make it more tolerable.
  • Make sure your equipment is properly serviced. Just like a car that needs an oil change and maintenance, your AC / HVAC unit(s) need it too. Have someone come out once a year to check your levels and ensure you change your filters as needed.
  • Ensure the Energy Star guidelines are adhered to for your home. As a real estate agent this is one thing I recommend to my clients, especially with older homes.
  • Use a programmable thermostat (and have someone other than me to tell you how to use it!). Kick it up or down during the day while you are gone to save a few hundred bucks a year.
  • Look at your light bulbs? Changing them out might save some change too. By swapping out 1 incandescent bulb to a compact fluorescent bulb, you might save up to $40 over the life of the bulb. {Read my article on swapping out our lightbulbs)
  • Black out curtains, blinds and more. Our house (you know — the one with ALL THE WINDOWS THAT FACES WEST) had a makeover once we had our first high electric bill {see above} and we bought the “sun block curtains” to help keep the light and the heat of our home.

  1. Electric bills can get high during the summer here. You can do an energy analysis on your account online. It compares your home to other homes similar to yours and lets you know how you stack up. Then you know if you should look into some changes, too.
