Ingredients
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 cups granulated sugar
  • ½-1 tsp flavoring extract or oil (optional)
  • food coloring (optional)
  • glass jar
  • skewer or lollipop stick
  • wooden clothes pins
Instructions
  1. Wet your wooden skewer or lollipop stick and roll it in granulated sugar. {This base layer will give the sugar crystals something to “grab” when they start forming.}
  2. Set the thread or skewer aside to dry while you prepare your sugar syrup.
  3. Bring your water to boil.
  4. Add your sugar one cup at a time, stirring after each addition.
  5. Continue to stir and boil the syrup until all of the sugar has been added and it is all dissolved.
  6. Remove the pan from the heat.
  7. If you are using colors or flavorings, add them now. {We didn't use any flavoring but did use the regular food dye coloring found in the grocery store.}
  8. Add 2-3 drops of food coloring and stir to ensure even, smooth color.
  9. Allow the sugar syrup to cool for about 10 minutes, then pour it into your glass jar.
  10. Place your sugared stick into the jar leaving about 1 inch from the bottom.
  11. Secure with the wooden clothes clip.
  12. We left ours uncovered but you can place a towel over the top if you cannot keep it out of the light.
  13. Place the jars in a low light area where it will be undisturbed.

Rock Candy Recipe

Yummy Rock Candy!  My kids love this stuff, it’s the highlight of our visits to Bass Pro Shops.  Silly me, I thought it would be the mermaids!  (Yes, we have live mermaid shows here in Vegas – I love living here!)  What this mom doesn’t love is the ingredient list….why so long rock candy maker?

This DIY Mom decided to make the ROCK CANDY to order….which I thought would mean pink but as you can see as you scroll down that was not the case.  I’ll be making mine pink next time.

Most of this project is waiting…..waiting for the rock candy crystals to grow.  Sometimes one will come out better then the other, so if your child is super excited for this to be awesome, make them a couple.

The kids wanted to check on it often so put ours on a shelf in our dinning room.

If you have seen no crystals forming after 24 hours, try boiling the sugar syrup again and dissolve another cup of sugar into it, then pour it back into the jar and skewer again.

Allow the rock candy to grow until it is the size you want….keeping in mind the size of your jar opening!  Once done, pull out and pat dry….Enjoy!
